Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTI)

Introduction

Urinary tract infections are the most common type of healthcare-associated infection, and most are caused by instrumentation of the urinary tract. Patients may receive a short-term indwelling urinary catheter while in the hospital, putting them at risk for a catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI). A CAUTI can be associated with increased morbidity, mortality, hospital cost, and length of stay. Resources, guidelines and best practices are available to reduce catheter-associated urinary tract infections.
